Welcome to the course on “Biodiversity surveys”. This course material has been produced by Dr Patrick Mucunguzi (Assoc. Prof.) the staff in the Departments of Biology and Environmental Sciences, School of Natural Sciences, Kampala International University.

The course introduces to the learners, the knowledge and principles of biodiversity in relation to natural resources management and conservation; local, regional and international policies, regulations and conventions on biodiversity; translocations and introductions of alien/exotic species or materials and assessment techniques. The course also seeks to place climate change within the context of broader anthropogenic environmental change, and biodiversity issues and policy dimensions. Students will acquire knowledge and skills to formulate management tools and policies to proactively respond to the challenges of conserving biological resources (at gene, population and ecosystem levels) amidst accelerated changes in landscape processes such as human population growth, agricultural expansion, land resources degradation, and climate change.

The material is suitable for use by students who enrolled on fulltime traditional face to face approach but now turned into those under the blended block model in the future. The study material will provide a sound foundation for learners in the area of sustainable use and conservation of biological resources.

This course is intended for people who want to either make career or enhance knowledge in the field of management and conservation of biological resources particularly plant and animal resources. This course provides knowledge and skills about management and conservation of tropical biological resources.

Course Description

This course will introduce students to the biodiversity concept, threats, natural resources policies, laws all linked to the concept of climate change. The course will equip students with basic skills in surveys, analyses and interpretation of a wide range of biodiversity data.
